Fleur’s lungs burned as she jogged along the beach early on Wednesday morning. The day was overcast, the clouds blocking in the heat and making it muggy. She’d go for a swim before she headed home. The ocean was calm, no wind stirring to lift the humidity and as she jogged, a school of fish darted through the shallows. At least they were cool.
Sweat dripped down her neck and between her breasts and she pushed herself harder. Mai wasn’t here to challenge her, to push her to her limits. Right now she’d be wrist deep in some kind of dough.
Fleur loved this time of morning, the routine of jogging so she could forget everything except putting one foot in front of the other. Nothing mattered outside of that for this short while.
Her phone rang, invading her thoughts, the sharp notes ringing out from the armband she wore. It could be work calling her in early, so she slowed and retrieved the phone.
Trevor.
She didn’t want to answer, didn’t want to be responsible for making any decisions related to him. She’d made enough bad ones as it was. But if she didn’t answer, she’d have to call back and that would be worse. She couldn’t ignore any message he left, not without seeming like a complete bitch.
She hit the answer button. “Hello.” Her breath was fast and she continued to walk along the sand. She couldn’t cool down too much.
“Fleur, I’m at the track. Gavin and I were going to do some more practice, but we discovered some bastard has smashed holes in the water tank.”
She stopped walking. “What?” He couldn’t possibly be serious.
“There’s water everywhere and the tank is empty.”
Fleur swore. The tank had cost an absolute fortune and they needed the water for the night race next weekend. “I’ll call Lincoln and be out as soon as I can.”
“Do you need us to stay here?”
She’d prefer they didn’t, but, “Lincoln might want to talk to you.” She hung up and called the police station.
When Sue answered, Fleur repeated what Trevor had told her.
“I’ll send someone out. Can you meet us there?”
“Yeah. I’ll be a while, I’m about halfway through my jog.”
“See you then.”
Fleur hung up and jogged down the beach, pushing herself harder as she went. This was the second act of vandalism this month — third if she counted the dumped waste. Why had someone taken a dislike to the club? They hadn’t had any complaints recently. The off-season was generally quiet. It was usually the beginning of the season, after the first race that the usual people complained again about the noise and the pollution. Not that the track was actually close to any of the complainants’ houses — they just didn’t like motorbikes.
Would the tank be repairable? Without any water the track would become a dust bowl which would make it too dangerous to race on. She’d need to source some elsewhere.
But first she needed to find out how bad the situation was.
She reached the path up to the car park and followed it, giving the ocean one last glance.
